Last Saturday, about 60 people came to hear Michel Gagne speak at The Art Institute of Portland.

The event was presented by ASIFA Portland and the Art Institute’s Inkwell Animation Club, and Mr. Gagne shared insights from his career in art and animation.

He showed the evolution of The Saga of Rex from illustrations, to a completed children’s book, to the graphic novel, and his current project of turning the graphic novel into an animated feature.

He also discussed his process and shared images and video from Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, his Annie- and BAFTA-award winning video game, as well as a generous smattering of other material from his long and prolific career.

Michel Gagne is an engaging speaker, moving easily from his inspirations, to finished work, to deep insights into his production process. Along the way, he includes funding, technology, time frames, and touches on the many amazing projects he’s undertaken. It was a deeply informative event, and we’d like again to thank sponsors The Jupiter Hotel, ADi, Fashionbuddha, SuperGenius, Cascade ACM Siggraph, and The Northwest Animation Festival, opening this Friday.

More information about Michel Gagne is available at his website, and please consider joining ASIFA Portland to support more events like this in the future.
